Vertac
Music I'll be Jamming:
Pedro the Lion: Indian Summer The song's opening lines remind me of the Vertac site, as well as the sarcastic approach to captilalism and politics he takes throughout the song.
While it may not sound like the hippest place to make a stop by, Jacksonville Arkansas houses one of the greater messes modernity has made in the south. Known as the Vector site, it is a pollution dump for industrial processes. The encyclopedia of Arkansas states it is "one of the nation’s worst hazardous waste sites... and the name “Vertac” soon became synonymous in Arkansas with the fear of industrial pollution, similar to how New Yorkers view Love Canal." The land was first leased in 1949, but it wasn't until 1979 that things got bad. Life magazine labeled Jacksonville a "poisoned town" and by 1985 declared the cities water contained with dioxin, a carcinogen.
This is an evident backlash of modernity in the South, and as I have explored its relationship with the South, I thought this would be a fitting town to stop by. Given that the characters in As I Lay Dying are anti-modernity, the stop seemed perfect. Here in the town lie the negative consequences of a new way of doing things not implemented properly.
The Vertac Site
There are a surprisingly small number of pictures related to the site. Whether it is illegal to upload pictures I'm not sure, but it seems like it.
Being an animal-lover is of course, a must since they will be working with animals every day. Many veterinary technicians like the work and study to become full fledged veterinarians afterward. Veterinary Technician Trainings in Arkansas
